After months of trying the traditional treatment of ice, rest, and NSAIDs for lateral epicondylitis (“tennis elbow”), and finding no relief, I searched for physical therapy exercises and came across the “Tyler Twist” that uses the Thera-Band Flexbar.
All I can say is that it’s a miracle cure. By the time I built up to doing 15 repetitions (which took about a week), the symptoms were almost gone.
One caveat: I’m a reasonably strong guy, so I ordered the Medium (green). In hindsight, I should have started with the Red (light). For anyone who is elderly or who has weak muscles, the Extra Light (yellow) would be even better.
I’ve had it on and off for almost 15 years. For me, when it starts, it sticks around for months.
I read about the studies that demonstrated how much faster people get better with this bar and a simple exercise. To be brief, the had to cancel the studies early for ethical reasons: the FlexBar group was doing so much better than the control group that they couldn’t, in good conscience, allow the control group to continue without the FlexBar treatment.
I can attest that this gets you to a place of very little pain very quickly. I’ve been at it about 2 weeks and I now only notice it when I stress it badly.
I read some reviews on some of the other FlexBar offerings on Amazon, where people bought a resistance that wasn’t right for them and regretted it. After reading and thinking about it, I decided to get red(light), green(medium), and blue(heavy). I lift weights, worked construction for a couple decades, and am just generally a little stronger than the average guy. Some others might do better with yellow/red/green(yellow being extra light).
I found that the red was pretty much uselessly light for me, and spent a week on green with very rapid improvement, then went up to blue.
Another interesting thing — I have plantar fasciitis, and I bought a wooden foot roller thing, which is kinda nice, but the little booklet that comes with these also recommends them for that, and I tried it, and it is WAY better that the wooden one. The difference seems to be that the ridges on the FlexBar run longways down the bar, whereas the ridges on the wooden thing are circumferential. So, when you roll your feet across it, the wooden ridges are going parallel to your motion, while the ridges on the FlexBar are cross-wise, and that seems to do better about stretching and massaging the tendons.

I have played tennis and racquetball every week for many years. I recently bought a new heavier racquetball racquet, going from 170 grams to 180 grams. Apparently that was enough to affect my elbow. It hurted enough to require ibuprofen and an ice pack after every game. I’ve never had elbow problems before. I self-diagnosed myself with tennis elbow and during my Internet searches, came across this device as a supplemental therapy. I’m a 50-something, 175 lb, 6′ left-handed guy in reasonable shape, and I went for the green Theraband FlexBar which turned out just about right for me. I mostly sit in an office all day, and during meeting that I’m not presenting, I use the FlexBar and do the “Super 7” tennis elbow exercises. I’ve also starting wearing one of those compression bands on my arm when playing tennis/racquetball. These exercises have dramatically improved my arm pain within 2 weeks, with the first improvements noticed during the first week. When doing the Tyler Twist, you’ll know you’re doing it right when you feel the pain/stress where your elbow hurts. By week three, I was no longer grabbing the FlexBar at the ends, but grabbing the FlexBar with the unaffected arm around the middle. This increased the twist pressure and made for a stronger exercise. It has now been several weeks. I have no pain doing normal activities and only occasional minor pain noticed after I play a particularly aggressive tennis/racquetball game. For the most part, I am pain-free. This is an extremely cheap solution when compared to a doctor visit and several physical therapy session costing hundreds of dollars. For me, this was well worth the gamble to try.

There is not a pound measurement associated with each color. The range starts from least to most as yellow, red, green, blue, black. I am 74 years old and also play tennis 2x/week (and I go to the gym about 3 additional times/week.)
